Objectives

Introduce students to the Unreal Engine environment, the VR Template, and the foundational steps to create, configure, and preview their first interactive VR project.

Activities

Learn what Unreal Engine is and how it's used in games and VR.
- Navigate the Unreal interface (Viewport, Content Browser, World Outliner, Details Panel).
- Understand project structure: Levels, Blueprints, Materials, and Static Mesh Actors.
- Create a new project using Blueprint-based templates (e.g., Third Person).
- Organize assets and understand the use of Static Meshes.
DIY: Start a project using the Third Person template, with desktop/console settings and starter content
Launch and explore the VR Template.
Understand that the VR template is built on the OpenXR framework.
Learn to preview a level in VR using the VR Preview mode or simulate via the editor without a headset.
Set up Meta Quest 2 (via Link Cable or Air Link):
- Install Meta Quest app and connect the headset.
- Enable “Unknown Sources” and set Oculus as OpenXR runtime.
Walk through images of a successful headset setup, Oculus environment, and the connection process

By completing these labs, students will:

Understand the role and interface of Unreal Engine in VR development.
Create and manage a VR project using appropriate templates and configurations.
Use the VR Template and understand its compatibility with OpenXR and devices like Meta Quest 2.
Successfully connect and configure a VR headset for real-time preview and testing.
Perform basic asset management and scene editing within Unreal.
