What is FERPA?
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) was passed by Congress in 1974. This federal law affords students basic privacy rights regarding their education records.

Why should I care?
We comply with the law because it is the right thing to do, and all institutions that receive federal funding are required to protect student privacy in specific ways.

What happens if I don't comply with FERPA?
There are several implications of a FERPA violation including:

harm to the student
disciplinary action for the employee
loss of federal funding for the institution
damage to OSU's reputation
federal complaints against the university and/or the employee
