A Glimpse Into the Future: An Overview of the Application of Nation-Wide Vehicular GPS Data in Connected Vehicles, Intersection Capacity Analysis, and Simulation Modeling

Abstract

The purpose of a transportation model, no matter if capacity or microscopic simulation, is to support transportation engineering decisions through what-if analyses. The typical modeling workflow has two distinct phases:

Build and calibrate base model that somewhat reflects current conditions
Modify that base model to analyze few what-if scenarios

The problem with that workflow is only that the effort to build and calibrate intersection models is extremely high and thus models take a long time and a lot of data to build and calibrate. As a result, projects often expend all their time and budget for simply building the base model and then have nothing left for actual decision support. This significantly limits the use of modeling in traffic engineering.

What if we could build and calibrate the base model automatically from existing data sources and then spend the duration of the project on actual decision support? This presentation explores how Connected Vehicle data can be processed and when joined with other data sources be used to generate and calibrate complete transportation models. Furthermore, this new approach can improve on the state-of-practice and its reliance on default parameters.

Justin Neill has 8 years of experience in transportation engineering and Computer Science and has a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Oregon State University in Transportation Engineering. At Traffic Technology Services, Justin’s responsibilities include developing new products and processes, managing nation-wide vehicular GPS data, writing algorithms and software, and managing a team filled with data scientists, engineers, and software developers. Justin has a patent titled “Deriving Traffic Signal Timing Plans from Connected Vehicle Trajectory Data”. Justin is registered as a Professional Engineer in the state of Oregon.

Thomas Bauer, P.E., PTOE, is the CEO and founder of Traffic Technology Services. He has over 30 years of experience in the fields of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), traffic engineering, transportation planning, and traffic software development. He is the inventor for numerous patents in the V2X space. Thomas holds master’s degrees in transportation engineering from Oregon State University and civil engineering from the University of Stuttgart, Germany and is a registered professional engineer in the State of Oregon.
