E-Commerce and Changing Urban Deliveries in New York City

Abstract

Over the last decade, the rapid rise of on-demand delivery services has revolutionized the landscape for urban delivery in many cities, including New York. As the temporal and spatial distributions of demand have changed, as well as the vehicle mix, infrastructure requirements to support safe, efficient, and sustainable goods movement have also evolved. In this presentation, Dr. Conway will provide an overview of several research projects using open data sources to understand changes in urban freight activity and infrastructure use. She will also discuss related recent policy changes in the city, and ongoing efforts to implement city logistics solutions.

Speaker Bio

Alison Conway is the Herbert G. Kayser Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the City College of New York. Dr. Conway conducts research primarily in the areas of urban freight and city logistics, freight data, and multi-modal interactions in the urban environment. She is the Deputy Director of SEMPACT, the US DOT-designated University Transportation Center (UTC) for Region 2, and is a partner in the Center for Understanding Future Travel Behavior and Demand, a national UTC. Dr. Conway currently serves as Chair of the Transportation Research Board’s (TRB’s) Freight Data Committee.
