Portland Intelligent Transportation Systems – How a City Uses Technology to Keep People Moving

Abstract

Traffic signals are an essential part of moving people safely and efficiently around Portland. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Section is responsible for communication between and technology at signalized intersections throughout the city. Learn about some of our latest projects including automated traffic signal performance measures (ATSPMs), a new central signal system, next-generation transit signal priority, and design and construction of fiber optic networks.

Speaker Bio

Alison Tanaka is an Engineer in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Section at the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). She received a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University and a Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering from Purdue University. She has worked in the transportation field for the past 12 years with a focus in traffic signals and ITS. The first 9 years of her career were spent at a private company in both Portland and Washington, D.C. For the past three years, she has worked with PBOT’s Signals, Street Lighting, and ITS Division. She is also a member of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Traffic Signal Systems Committee (TSSC) and a panel member for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP).
