Peer Observation
Peer observations are conducted within the College of Business and across the university to evaluate, assess, develop, and provide feedback on teaching effectiveness. Below are some tools to help you engage in a peer review process.
Peer Observation Documents
- Observation Narrative Form
Download Observation Narrative Form
- This is a largely blank form that provides space for you to record specific observations and to time stamp as you are watching a face to face class. It also reminds you to record concrete descriptions of activities, actions, and observations, rather than assessing or evaluating in the moment.
- Quality Teaching Observation for Feedback

- This form can help guide your assessment and evaluation, based on the OSU Quality Teaching framework. You may wish to review this form PRIOR to conducting the evaluation, and to have it with you as you conduct an observation. However, we suggest you use the Observation Narrative Form to record your observations in real time, and then use this form secondarily to translate your observations into an assessment and evaluation.
COB Teaching Expectations
In Spring 2022, the College of Business adopted a platform of basic (floor) teaching expectations that all teaching faculty within the college are expected to meet. You may wish to review these expectations prior to your observation: COB Teaching Expectations
Included in these teaching expectations are two rubrics, which again provide a floor for essential teaching expectations. These rubrics may also be helpful when conducting a peer review.
Student Learning Experience
One input to the peer review process is the consideration of the student voice and their experience in the classroom. From 2012-2021, OSU used a survey instrument known as the electronic Student Teaching Evaluation (eSET). In 2021, OSU transitioned to a new survey instrument known as the Student Learning Experience (SLE), which is based on and reflects the OSU Quality Teaching framework. Two questions have been maintained from the old eSET and are currently used by the COB for annual evaluation purposes:
- (Q1) The course as a whole was
- (Q2) The instructor's contribution to the course was
The questions on the SLE can be found here. As you review feedback from students, it is important to keep in mind that students are reflecting on their personal experience in the classroom, and are not independently assessing the quality or effectiveness of the faculty member.
