Instructor Guidance for Canvas

Your Canvas site is the primary point of contact that students will have when reviewing course material and completing/submitting assignments--for an Ecampus class, of course, it is their primary point of contact with the class materials and with you. It's therefore essential that Canvas sites meet certain basic requirements.

Creating Canvas Courses

Most of us create our course by copying over content from a previous term (our own or another instructor's version of the same site: talk to your (A)DTLE for help on this or any course creation concerns! If you decide to create a new course "from scratch" here are templates for online and in person classes that can be helpful: https://learn.oregonstate.edu/canvas/canvas-faculty-tools/canvas-templates

Links and Embedded Content

When creating content in Canvas, faculty can place links to materials directly in the content and embed videos directly into the page. These can help tie course content together and help students stay focused on the course. Use the instructions below to learn more.

Discussions and Groups

For large courses, you may want to break up the class into smaller groups for more manageable discussions. To achieve this in Canvas, you must first create student Groups in Canvas. It is easiest to create these groups randomly. Additionally, since groups are static after they have been formed, it is best to wait until after the add/drop date for the term has passed before creating your groups. Learn about creating Canvas Groups and then creating Group Discussions below.

Canvas Quizzes

Canvas quizzes are quizzes students take through Canvas. Most Canvas quiz questions are automatically graded. Learn the basics of Canvas quizzes using the information below.
